Learning With Experts (LWE) is an innovative digital learning company that develops highly engaging online education platforms across a range of specialist sectors. Building on its proven learning technology and successful collaborations with NHS organisations, LWE identified an opportunity to address one of the most significant challenges facing modern maternity care: ensuring every expectant and new mother has access to high-quality antenatal education and support, regardless of location or personal circumstances.
Working in partnership with the National Childbirth Trust (NCT), Learning With Experts sought to develop a next-generation AI-enabled Remote Perinatal Learning and Safety Platform that could extend the reach of gold-standard antenatal education to mothers who would otherwise struggle to access in-person services. The platform aimed to combine expert-led online learning with artificial intelligence capable of identifying signs of disengagement or emotional distress, enabling earlier intervention and more personalised support.
GrantUp identified the Innovate UK Biomedical Catalyst Industry-led R&D competition as the ideal funding opportunity, recognising the strong alignment between the project's clinical impact, digital health innovation and commercial potential. We worked closely with Learning With Experts throughout the application process, helping transform a technically sophisticated platform into a compelling funding proposal centred on measurable healthcare outcomes.
Our consultants refined the innovation narrative to focus on preventative healthcare, maternal wellbeing and wider NHS benefits, rather than simply describing technical functionality. We strengthened the application by clearly evidencing the unmet need for accessible perinatal education, demonstrating clinical relevance and highlighting the credibility provided by the company's proven online learning platform, NHS validation and strategic partnership with the National Childbirth Trust.
Throughout the application, GrantUp challenged and refined the commercial positioning, reduced delivery risks and ensured the proposal closely aligned with the objectives of the Biomedical Catalyst competition. This included strengthening the evidence base, clarifying the route to adoption, improving the commercialisation strategy and demonstrating how the innovation could deliver meaningful improvements for mothers, healthcare professionals and the wider NHS.
The project was successfully awarded Innovate UK Biomedical Catalyst funding, enabling Learning With Experts to develop and validate its Remote Perinatal Learning and Safety Platform. The funding supports the integration of AI-powered sentiment analysis within socially interactive online classrooms, the development of expert-led antenatal and postnatal learning content alongside the NCT, and extensive validation with mothers and healthcare professionals. Beyond supporting product development, the award establishes Learning With Experts as an emerging innovator within digital maternal healthcare while creating new opportunities for commercial growth, NHS adoption and improved outcomes for families across the UK.
